Feeling a little weary from all of your holiday spending splurges? Sure, you tried to stick to a budget, but you’re so generous that perhaps you went a little overboard.

Everybody makes mistakes, and you can definitely get yourself back on track.   Along with a wee bit of determination and discipline, our 11 tips can provide some post-holiday financial detox for 2010:

  1. Consider Cutting the Cards – If your spending got way out of hand because of your credit cards, try to get rid of a few of them, in order to spend more responsibly.
  2. Shop Around For Insurance – After a few years, you should look at other insurance providers to save money. Everyone needs insurance, but the less it costs, the more cash you have on hand.
  3. Establish a Budget – Look at how much you earn every month, and how much you spend. Find out specifically how much money is going out, and figure out if you need to keep some of it in your wallet.
  4. Use Your Hobbies to Make Money – If you are good at something like technology, writing or public speaking, get out there and get some experience! You might be surprised to find that people will pay you to do what you used to do for free.
  5. Carpool – There are many advantages to carpooling, but saving money is a big one. If you have to commute every day, pair up with someone. Besides, it might make going to work more interesting .
  6. Unnecessary Expenses – Cut out some expenses in your budget you don’t need, like subscriptions to online services. You can get many of these for free, with a little bit of work.
  7. Cut Going Out – Everyone goes out and spends money, in different ways. Starbucks, restaurants and movies are a few places that can become big monthly expenses. Think of creative alternatives.
  8. Take Back What You Don’t Need – Got a gift with a receipt? Take it back if you don’t really need it. No one will know, and if you have the receipt, then why not?
  9. Go Cash Only – This can be a nuisance, but think about keeping cash on your person and using credit cards only to pay recurring bills. You might find that you’re spending a lot less money.
  10. Get a Cheap Hobby – There are many relaxing things you can do that cost little and have high value.  Music, cooking, crafts, reading, and the infamous “long walks on the beach” are all good alternatives.
  11. Find a Part-Time Job – You might want to think about making a little extra money. If you like hanging out in bars, become a bartender. Like clothes? Retail stores are always looking for people.
