The Master Promissory Note is a contract that a student agrees to. It states that a student will repay the loan to the U.S. Department of Education. In order to fill out the MPN you must have a FAFSA Pin number.

Federal Student Loan versus Private Student Loans

When to use federal loans or private loans is a question many students ask. The difference in the two is;

  • Direct Student loans are U.S. Department of Education loan
  • Private Student loans are not guaranteed by the U.S. government

When a student picks a college or university that is more expensive than the Direct Student loan limit allows, then, the student will need a private student loan to fill in the difference.
